Areas covered by our database

Our database currently serves only these locations - so, although the app can be downloaded throughout the UK, it will only give results for Norwich and Great Yarmouth. We’re looking to expand the locations covered by the database as we grow the project.

How does the Kanndoo app work?

Our simple-to-use app can be downloaded and set up in a few seconds. Once you share your phone’s location with the app, you’ll be able to see all the help and support available within a 5-mile radius either as a list or on a map centred on your location.

Support for homeless people

The app lists filterable categories of nearby support, including

  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Soup kitchens
  • Toilets
  • Washing facilities
  • Support/Advice
  • Medical assistance

Organisations that offer any kind of support to homeless people or people in poverty can be listed in our database. People using our app will be directed to the help they need.

Why develop an app for homeless people?

In line with the general Kanndoo philosophy of listening to people, we talked to people living in poverty and the organisations that offer support and asked them about their needs. We ran various ideas past them, and we researched and shared articles about policies and approaches for improving the lives of homeless people - thinking hard about what had worked and why.

We discovered that there was a lot of help already available, but that it was often disjointed - with overprovision of some services and underprovision of others. As support is often organised independently by many small organisations doing what they can, there is no central database of help available in a particular locality.

We hope to change this with the development and roll out of the Kanndoo app - creating a centralised database of support services accessible according to a person’s location.

The app will benefit homeless people and people who are living in poverty.

The app should also be of use to organisations offering support.

Who is the app aimed at?

First and foremost, the app will benefit homeless people and people who are living in poverty. They will be able to see what help is available and receive notifications for events they wish to be reminded of. We envisage this lightening some of the mental load of remembering where and when you need to be to access support.

The app should also be of use to organisations offering support. You can promote the app to individuals who may benefit from it. And you can use it to see where support is focussed in their locality and address any gaps. For instance, a soup kitchen could quickly identify days on which there are fewer free shared meals on offer and fill a gap in provision.
